Zimnicea is the southernmost point of Romania, 42 km from the county seat, Alexandria, 130 km from the Capital and 180 km from Craiova. The Danube passes at a distance of only 2 km from the city centre. In this area, there are no bridges that cross the border, there are no places for industrial exploitation of fords (ballasts) and there are no hard-to-reach places. In drought situations, the Danube River keeps its current normal course. The navigable channel on the Danube River does not change, the only change being the low flow and the shrinking of the bed. Located in the Danube Meadow, it has nearby Balta Suhaia and Ostrovul Gâsca, protected areas of national interest. Following the 1977 earthquake, local authorities reported the destruction of 80% of the city, but no casualties. After 1990, these data were questioned and it is said that the destructions were caused by the overzealousness of the city leaders at the time, although the mayor at the time, Sandu Dumitru, denies it. The reconstruction program was started by order of Ceaușescu and, although it lasted three years, a lot of apartment blocks remained unfinished. Hunting-fishing tourism and wine tourism are practised in the area. “Cramele Voivodului”, relying on the special qualities of the soil and the temperate climate, conducive to the cultivation of vines in the area, has developed a highly industrialized viticultural sector, in the southernmost area of the country, cultivating vines with noble varieties. Here was inaugurated in 2010, one of the most modern combined wineries in the country, with a capacity of 20,000 hl/year, wines with controlled designation of origin, both white (Selected Crâmposie, Italian Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc ), as well as tomatoes (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Fetească Neagră, Pinot Noir) or Muscat and Hamburg (table). A tradition of the city is the “Zărezan” wine and vine festival, which is organized every year on February 1 and is attended by guests from Bulgaria. Another popular celebration of the city is “Brumărelul” which takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from the middle of October. The tourist objects of the municipality are the former camp for pupils from Zimnicea, located on the Zimnicea – Zimnicea Port road in a special natural setting and beaches on the banks of the Danube, as well as favourable places for recreational fishing.

În zona Zimnicea nu exista poduri care traversează frontiera, locuri de exploatare industrială a vadurilor (balastiere) sau locuri greu accesibile. În situații de secetă, fluviul Dunărea își păstrează actualul curs normal. Șenalul navigabil pe fluviul Dunărea nu se modifică, singura modificare fiind debitul scăzut și micșorarea albiei. Situat în Lunca Dunării, are în apropiere Balta Suhaia și Ostrovul Gâsca, arii protejate, de interes național. În urma cutremurului din 1977, autoritățile locale au raportat distrugerea a 80% din oraș, dar nicio victimă. După 1990, aceste date au fost puse la îndoială și se spune că distrugerile au fost cauzate de excesul de zel al conducătorilor orașului din acea vreme, deși primarul de atunci, Sandu Dumitru, neagă. Programul de reconstrucție a fost demarat din ordinul lui Ceaușescu și, deși a durat trei ani, în urma acestuia au rămas o mulțime de blocuri de locuințe nefinalizate. În zonă se practică în special turismul de vânătoare și pescuit și turismul viticol. “Cramele Voievodului”, mizând pe calitățile deosebite ale solului și climatului temperat, propice cultivării viței de vie din zona, a dezvoltat un sector viticol puternic industrializat, în cea mai de Sud zona a tarii, cultivând viță de vie cu soiuri nobile. Aici a fost inaugurat în 2010, unul din cele mai moderne combinate de vinificație din țară, cu o capacitate de 20.000 hl/an, vinuri cu denumire de origine controlata, atat albe (Crâmposie Selecționată, Riesling Italian, Pinot Gris, Chardonay, Sauvignon Blanc), cât și roșii (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Fetească Neagră, Pinot Noir) sau Muscat și Hamburg (de masă). O tradiție a orașului este sărbătoarea vinului și a viței de vie „Zărezan” ce se organizează în fiecare an la 1 februarie și la care participă și oaspeți din Bulgaria. O altă sărbătoare populară a orașului este “Brumărelul” care se desfășoară în sâmbăta și duminica de la mijlocul lunii octombrie. Obiectele turistice ale municipiului sunt: popasul fostei tabere pentru elevi de la Zimnicea, situată pe comunicația Zimnicea – Zimnicea Port într-un cadru natural deosebit și plaje pe malurile Dunării, precum și locuri prielnice pentru practicarea pescuitului sportiv de agrement.
