These are the historical regions in Romania. They are geographic areas which at some point in time had a cultural, ethnic, linguistic or political basis, regardless of present-day borders.

Transylvania (also known as Ardeal) is a historical region which is located in central Romania. On a relief map, the region is bound on the east and south by the Carpathians and on the west by the Apuseni Mountains. The term sometimes encompasses not only Transylvania proper, but also Maramureş, Crişana and part of Banat.
